Malala Yousafzai the renowned social activist recently met Greta Thunberg, the young environmental leader from Sweden. The two young leaders met for the first time on 25th February 2020 and this clearly marks an incredible moment in history. This meeting took place at Oxford University. Thunberg was there for talks about science, climate change, and even voting while Yousafzai is a student at the Uni. the two took time out to sit and chat together between the talks.
Both took to social media to announce their meeting. While Thunberg expressed her joy at meeting her “role model” on Instagram, Yousafzai took to Twitter to share their picture together. Her caption read: “She’s the only friend I’d skip school for.”
Yousafzai captured the world’s attention when back in 2012 this 15-year-old was shot by a Taliban gunman. She was always keen on education and encouraged other girls to do so as well. For the last 8 years, Malala has leveraged the attention she got in order to spread awareness about women’s education and how certain countries still try to dominate this group. Her continued efforts have also secured her a Nobel Peace Prize!
Thunberg is an environmental activist from Sweden who is dedicated to the cause of climate change. She started by striking school once every week in order to gain the government’s attention. Both have spoken at multiple stages where they have asked people much older than them to take up the causes and improve the lives of the common people.
These two iconic women are among the most influential ones of our times and them coming together ignites hope in many. The world truly needs more of such courageous people and it stuns us how these young girls have managed to not only campaign for their causes but are actually holding us all accountable. Be it the cause of women or the cause of improving our home planet, Malala Yousafzai and Greta Thunberg are doing their bit. Isn’t it time we took some action as well?
