Florin Cezar Ouatu, born in Ploiesti, Romania, is the son of a late flautist and music teacher at Mozarteum University of Salzburg. He is a pianist and a classical singer by profession; specifically, a countertenor.
He has been nicknamed Cezar Vocea (Cezar the voice) and simply Cezar, by which he is commonly known.
A Music Academy, Milan graduate, Cezar has won hearts and fans all over Europe thanks to the Eurovision singing contest where he represented Romania and stood 13th among numerous contestants.
Cezar is already famous in the classical music world. To quote the Metro: “Cezar has performed in operas across Europe – as well as performing alongside the likes of Andrea Bocelli – but has also released pop-opera tracks including this 2012 effort Cinema Paradiso.”
And guess what? He came to audition for X-Factor UK.

And boy oh boy, what a performance he delivered. The 38 year old man, who really doesn’t look like much of a singer, had everyone overwhelmed with emotional release through his rich countertenor voice, that could just keep going higher and higher in pitch, to incomprehensible heights.
The language of the song he sung was Nessun Dorma, an aria from the final act of Giacomo Puccini’s opera Turandot; it was previously recorded by Bocelli, with whom the Romanian had performed before.
What his performance showcased perfectly was the fact that experience and skill won the day all the time.
He was born in a family of musicians and was raised in Italy, the heartland of operatic music. He has been playing the piano since a meagre six years of age.
And he is still at it, to this day, more than three decades later.
The audience too, who are not normally used to operatic music in this modern age, were simply spellbound, a testament of the age-old adage, that music needs and knows no boundaries, especially not of language.
The spontaneity of the performance, combined with the bordering-on-shy personality of the 38 year old Romanian, who was already quite famous even before coming to X-Factor and winning four yesses obviously, just made everyone’s day.
Let’s see what the judges had to say about him, shall we?
The Metro who did an extensive article on him, quoted the judges, as follows:
“Cezar’s rendition of Nessun Dorma had all the judges – and the audience – on their feet – as his performance came to an end. He appeared overcome with emotion as Louis told him: ‘Where you can go to vocally, to me is impossible to comprehend. That was quite simply unbelievable.’ Simon added: ‘Cezar, you projected to us something very special – a great energy, somebody who really needs a break – you just nailed it.’”
The world is a small place now, thankfully, with old things, new things and common things and rare things, all come together to compete on a shared stage; the crux is however, in such an era of cultural exchange, there are never any losers; only winners and better winners.
